It is tax time again. Help on filing taxes is available again this year by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) for taxpayers. Location of the site is at the Fairview Christian Church, 2320 S. Grand Ave. in Carthage.
The Carthage VITA site will open in a designated room at the church on Feb. 6 and will prepare returns on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until the end of tax season. Returns will be prepared by volunteers and will be electronically filed at no charge. Direct Deposit to a bank account can be arranged. Tax returns will be prepared by appointment only and can be made by calling Zelma at 417-388-7609.
Federal and State Income taxes will be prepared. Federal returns should be prepared before the State return, as information from the Federal return is needed to complete the State return.
Taxpayers should bring picture identification, Social Security cards for all person listed on the return, and all documents needed to prepare their return. This might include: W-2 forms from employment, 1099INT forms from interest earned, 1099DIV forms from dividends earned, 1099R forms from retirement income, 1099Misc for self employment and 1099SSA forms from Social Security. All income must be reported on your return. Make sure you have received all your respective forms before you come to get your taxes filed. Providers of 1099R may not send them until Feb. 15. Bring proof of essential insurance coverage. Bring a copy of your 2017 tax return.
The Carthage VITA tax site is sponsored by SWMO We Care Coalition, which also sponsors the Joplin and Anderson sites. Volunteers are trained by the IRS who provides the computer program. Fairview Christian Church will donate the space and wi-fi; local banks, other organizations and satisfied customers donate money and equipment to make the free site possible. MSSU hosts the training sessions.
If you need to file a Missouri Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTC) only, call the Carthage “Can Do” Senior Center at 417-358-4741 for an appointment.
