The Carthage High School men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed in their first dual of the year against Carl Junction High School on December 2nd.
The men’s varsity team suffered a bitter loss to the Bulldogs, dropping all but three matches to a seasoned and tough CJ squad. Kixson Reynolds (113), Jace Nichols (138) and Randy Teo (106) came away victorious, winning by fall, major decision and forfeit over CJ’s Max Jiminez and Cole Messer.
The JV men’s squad split 50/50 with the CJ grapplers, with key wins by Leighton Butterworth (106), Asher Haslip (126) – winner by fall, Geovanny Paxtor (144) – winner by fall, Erick Mejia (150) – winner by fall and Roberto Estrada (165) – winner by fall.
The ladies recorded a solid team win over a small Carl Junction squad, taking 10 of the 14 weight classes. Key wins came from Kaylee James (140) and Irish Lee (155) with wins by fall.

The weekend saw the ladies and men traveling to opposite sides of the state, with the Tussle for the Tiara Tournament at North Kansas City High School and the Francis Howell North Tournament in St. Charles. The ladies finished 4th at Tussle for the Tiara with 6 medalists, and the boys finished 8th at the Francis Howell North tournament with 2 varsity medalists and 2 JV medalists.
Kaylee James was the ladies champion at 140 lbs., pinning all of her opponents from Oak Park, West Platte, Raytown and North Kansas City. Irish Lee (145) and Emely Hernandez Guzman (130) brought home second place finishes, besting their Neosho, Lee’s Summit West, West Platte, Blue Springs South and Excelsior Springs. Lee posted her only loss on the day to Lebanon, as did Hernandez Guzman. Hadley White finished second, besting opponents from Excelsior Springs, North Kansas City and Blue Springs South, ultimately falling to North Kansas City in the finals. Arianna Medrano finished third on the day with wins over Lebanon, Center and Excelsior Springs.
The men’s team posted two placers at the varsity level and two at junior varsity. Randy Teo (106) and Kayden Hole (157) both brought home 3rd place finishes after winning matches against wrestlers from Lebanon, Jackson, Francis Howell North and Edwardsville. Leighton Butterworth (106) finished first place in the junior varsity division and Denis Velasquez (126) finished second.
