Vision Carthage Spruces Up Historic Bridge on Route 66

CARTHAGE, Mo. – Vision Carthage completed a beautification project of the Oak Street bridge to spruce up an area visited by hundreds of travelers on Route 66. Known by most locals as “Whee Bridge” or “Tummy Tickle Hill,” this Carthage landmark got some TLC through the joint efforts of the Carthage Public Works Department and Vision Carthage volunteers.

Galbraith Flooring donated paint towards the project and Sherwin Williams provided a generous discount, making the project supplies possible. Scouts, Youth Build of Southwest Missouri and many local volunteers combined efforts to complete the project over the course of two days, making a visible improvement.

In addition to sanding and painting the railing, volunteers also picked up trash to beautify this space on the Mother Road.

“We are proud to see this area looking so much better for tourists and locals alike,” said Sally Stuart, Co Director of Vision Carthage. “We had helpers of all ages pitching in on this project because we all have fond memories of this bridge and want it to look as good as it can for as long as it can.”
