CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage High School student Harlie Farmer was recently selected to attend the Missouri 4-H Legislative Academy in Jefferson City, representing Jasper County and Missouri 4-H.
Farmer was one of only 20 students across the state chosen for the program following a competitive application and interview process. Applicants were required to submit multiple essays outlining their goals, leadership experiences, and how they hoped to use the opportunity to make a difference.
During her time at the Capitol, Farmer shadowed Missouri State Representative Tim Taylor, attended a dinner at the Governor’s Mansion, met Governor Mike Kehoe, and observed the legislative process in action, including time in the voting chambers.
Farmer’s interest in agriculture and public policy made the experience especially meaningful. She shared that her goal was to better understand how to advocate for agricultural communities and learn how to make her voice heard in the legislative process.
This opportunity provided valuable insight into the role of government and strengthened her interest in pursuing a future career in agricultural policy.
