The Carthage Tiger men’s and women’s teams travelled to Harrisonville and Kansas City before Christmas to compete in two separate tournaments.
The ladies took three wrestlers to the KC Stampede Tournament – widely seen as one of the toughest tournaments in the Midwest.
This was the first time Carthage had entered wrestlers in the tournament, and the work the ladies put in was rewarded with a first and fifth-place finish from Kaylee James (140) and Irish Lee (145). While Hadley White (105) did not place in the tournament, she scored a key win by fall over North Point’s Lilyan Kamish in the second round. James received a bye the first round and then proceeded to go on a tear, pinning opponents in all but the third round, as Lebanon’s Ilyana Martinez held her to a 9-5 decision. Lee also sailed through to the semifinals with falls in each of her respective rounds. Nixa’s Kamryn Bourbon ended Lee’s streak by pinning her and dropping her to the consolation side of the bracket. Lebanon’s Natalie Joiner then squeaked out a 4-3 win in the consolation semis, but Irish rebounded in the fifth-place match with a fall over College Park’s Disiree Romero.

The boys competed at the Harrisonville Tournament, finishing with 3 medalists. With several kids fighting through illness and injury, the hope is getting the full lineup back in place soon.
This tournament was a great indicator of the team’s continued growth as last year Jace Nichols (medalist at 138) attended this tournament as a manager, Douglas Ball (3rd at 144) did not attend, and Steve Serious (2nd at 215) went 2-4. Nichols came away with a fourth-place finish after going undefeated until the semifinal match against Webb City’s Cylis French, and the third-place match against Helias’s James Lauf who won by fall. Ball secured a third place finish, with only one loss to Smith-Cotton in the semifinals, and Steve Serious earned the highest medal of the weekend at 2nd place, losing only to Rockwood Summit’s Mohamed Hussein in the finals.
