Schrader named outstanding wrestler at Platte County Tournament

In a week plagued with injuries and skin conditions, Coach Kenny Brown was very pleased with his wrestlers’ performance at last weekend’s Platte County Invitational.  “With three open weight classes for Carthage, I was very content to finish in the top half of the competition.  The last thing I want to do this late in the season is bring a kid back before they are ready or throw a newbie to the wolves.  Platte is always a tough tournament and is good practice for the level of competition we will see at State,“ Brown stated.

The competitive atmosphere only served to fuel juniors, Brandon Crow and Kale Schrader, as they both made their way to first place matches.  Crow finished second overall with a close loss to Platte County’s Jayden Walls, while Schrader’s undefeated record remained intact with a championship win over St, James Academy’s Cade Lautt, earning him Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.  Both heading into the first place match with identical, undefeated records, Schrader and Lautt battled back and forth, with Schrader ultimately coming out the victor. Lautt, who is ranked number two in Kansas Class 5 rankings, is also ranked number sixteen nationally by Intermat.  Schrader’s win and undefeated record has now elevated him to a national ranking, as well, coming in at number fifteen, according to Intermat.

Coach Brown could not be more pleased with his progress.  “Kale’s a great kid who works hard.  As a returning state placer, he has helped motivate kids during practice, especially with senior, Dalen Moore, out with an injury. I think he has definitely added an element of humor to the team – especially on the bus rides.  Wrestling is tough and Kale does a great job balancing fun and hard work.”
