Miller homers, but Lions fall 8-1 in NCAA Tournament

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Freshman Matt Miller hit his team-high 12th home run of the season, but the Missouri Southern baseball team fell 8-1 to No. 12 ranked Central Missouri today in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.

The Lions (35-20) will play the loser of the nightcap between St. Cloud State and Central Oklahoma at 3:30 pm tomorrow from Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.

Southern got a pair of hits from Ryan Hunter and Miller added a home run. Freddie Landers, Dexter Swims and Denver Coffee had a hit each for the Lions.

Zach Parish started but didn’t have his normal stuff as he went just four and a third, striking out two hitters and fell to 9-2 on the season. Bradly Hershey threw two thirds of an inning, while Brennon Covington threw the final three innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit.

Central (39-14) fot three hits from Mason Janvrin, while three other Mules had two hits each. Ben Kelsch started and went the distance, striking out eight and walking one.

Southern will play again at 3:30 pm Friday against the loser of the Central Oklahoma and St. Cloud State game. The winner of that game will move on to play at 7 pm against the loser of the winner’s bracket game.
