On August 26, I attended a hearing of the Joint Committee on Government Accountability to learn more about Missouri’s child welfare system and the work of the Children’s Division. The hearing covered important issues including child safety, placement with relatives, child fatalities, reunification, and the backlog of child abuse and neglect investigations.
I believe protecting Missouri’s children must remain one of our highest priorities. While additional funding has helped reduce the large backlog Missouri previously faced, recent reports show that some areas are again experiencing high caseloads and significant delays. We need to make sure Children’s Division employees have the resources, support, and training they need to do their jobs effectively and, most importantly, keep children safe.
I also appreciate Governor Kehoe’s creation of the Missouri Child Welfare Task Force, which will bring together child welfare professionals, law enforcement, courts, legislators, attorneys, advocates, and other experts to identify gaps and recommend improvements. I will continue to follow this work and support efforts to strengthen Missouri’s child welfare system and better protect children and families.
