Norma June Havely, 100, Carthage, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at her home. She was born on April 27, 1925, in Three Sands, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Clarence Richard “Dick” Edmisten and Bertie Alice (Payne) Edmisten. Norma’s life was a tapestry of warmth, friendship, and artistic passion that touched many.
Norma’s journey began in the heart of Oklahoma, where she spent her early years before moving to Tulsa. There, she completed her education, graduating from Tulsa Central High School in 1943. Norma’s intelligence and commitment to her studies were evident, setting a strong foundation for the remarkable life that followed. Norma married the love of her life, George Havely, on March 19, 1942, in Sedan, Kansas; he preceded her in death on October 26, 2000. Following her graduation, Norma embarked on a fulfilling career with Kay Electric Cooperative in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Her role as a cashier allowed her to connect with countless individuals, serving her community with a smile that could light up any room. Norma’s dedication to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family and friends.
Family was the cornerstone of Norma’s life. She is survived by her loving children, Pete Havely (wife Linda), Joplin, Missouri, and Marsha Scott, (husband Nick Nemmers) Kansas City, Missouri; her grandsons, David Havely, Carthage, Missouri, and Steven Havely (wife Ashley), Parkville, Missouri; her great-grandchildren, Harper and Hudson Havely; her nieces, Joyce Hill (husband Doug), Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Linda Rogero (husband Steve), Cypress, Texas; her nephew, Stephen Ives, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Edmisten, Jr., and Orville Edmisten; and her sister, Colleen Ives.
An artist at heart, Norma was a gifted china painter, her works reflecting the beauty she found in the world. Her affiliation with the World Organization of China Painters in Oklahoma was a source of great pride and joy, allowing her to share her craft and connect with fellow artists. Norma’s creative spirit was further expressed through her role as a water safety instructor, a testament to her dedication to the well-being of others. A long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Norma’s faith was unwavering. She embodied the church’s values of love and service, extending her kindness to all she encountered.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Ethel Reece Cemetery, Barnsdall, Oklahoma. Norma will lie in state from 12 pm to 5 pm, Monday, June 23, 2025, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, for those who wish to pay their respects and sign the register book.
