Gary T. Hoskins, 84, passed away on January 17, 2022, after a short illness. He was born at Jane Chinn Hospital in Webb City, Missouri, on July 18, 1937, to Thomas B. Hoskins and N. Maxine Hoskins of Joplin, Missouri.
Hoskins was a 1955 graduate of Joplin High School. He received a degree from the former Joplin Junior College, attended Pittsburg State University and completed his education with a graduate degree in banking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Hoskins had a distinguished 43-year career in the banking industry, the final 20 years as senior vice president of commercial, industrial and municipal lending for Southwest Missouri Bank (SMB) in Carthage, Missouri. He retired from SMB on December 31, 2002, remaining as a consultant for several years. Earlier in his career, he served on the board of directors and as a vice president for Southwestern Bank and Trust in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma City, he served as vice chairman of the Capitol Hill YMCA of Oklahoma City.
A long-time member of First Baptist Church in Carthage, Hoskins served on various committees and was chairman of several of those committees. In addition, he served on committees for the Spring River Baptist Association, including on some committees in the role of chairman.
During his 52 years in Carthage, his community volunteerism included: president of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce; president of the Carthage Area United Way Fund; and president of the Carthage Economic Development Board. Hoskins also served on the Jasper County Development Board; Carthage Sheltered Workshop Board; Carthage Kiwanis Club Board; Carthage Industrial Development Board; Carthage Historic Preservation Inc. Board; For-All Bible & Music Inc. Board (Northpark Mall); and was appointed by the Jasper County Commission to serve as a charter member (serving for 10 years) of the Jasper County Sheltered Facilities Board. As an avid duck hunter, he also served on the boards for both the Joplin and Carthage Ducks Unlimited. He was also a member of the board for the Lakewood Manor Boat Dock Association Inc. in Shell Knob, Missouri.
Hoskins was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, W. Edward “Eddie” Hoskins. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hoskins, Carthage. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Oct. 13, 2021. He is also survived by: three sons, Mark (Cindi) Hoskins, Joplin, Brent (Beth) Hoskins, Lenexa, Kansas, and Mike (Suzi) Hoskins, Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Patrick (Ashley) Hoskins, Oronogo, Missouri, Mallory (B.J.) Huffman, Kansas City, Missouri, Olivia Hoskins, Joplin, Missouri, Andrew Hoskins, New York City, New York, and Matthew (Mykell Ma) Hoskins, Denver, Colorado; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon Hoskins, Melanie Hoskins, Desmond Huffman and Rigby Huffman.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Carl Garrett officiating. Mark Hoskins, Brent Hoskins, Mike Hoskins, Patrick Hoskins, Andrew Hoskins and Matthew Hoskins will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Multiple Sclerosis Association or The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation in care of the mortuary.
Due to the current health crisis, the family requests that masks be worn at all services.
