Vision Carthage Calls for Artists to Promote Tourism

CARTHAGE, Mo. – In partnership with the Route 66 Subcommittee of Tourism, Vision Carthage is seeking a variety of artists to support a community art installation series. This series will include a total of 20 large maple leaf cutouts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Known as the Maple Leaf City, Carthage’s rich history on the Mother Road will be celebrated through the creative lens of local artists. Once “adopted” and painted by selected artists, these maple leaves will be installed in high-traffic tourist destinations chosen for their local and historic significance by the Route 66 Subcommittee. Tourists will be able to “check-in” at each maple leaf utilizing a local passport book as they hunt for all 20.

In addition to adding color and more public art to Carthage, this is a fun way to draw out tourists and locals alike,” said Sally Stuart, Co Director of Vision Carthage. “We want people to eat, shop, and play in this community all year long.”

Once completed, the maple leaves will be unveiled during an art walk hosted on the Historic Carthage Square before being installed in their final location. While each leaf will be unique, reflecting the theme chosen by the artist and approved by the subcommittee, every leaf will incorporate the Route 66 symbol in some capacity.

Artists may submit their proposed designs for consideration to Vision Carthage after viewing full bid details at VisionCarthage.org. Bids will be accepted through Feb. 21.
