CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage 6th Grade Center turned spare change into a big difference last week during its spirited Homecoming Penny Wars. Over just three days, students rallied together and raised an impressive $1,383.96 to support the Carthage Humane Society.
The competition, held during first-hour classes, went far beyond bragging rights. Students competed for the chance to win an extra recess, a sweet treat, and the honor of being crowned Penny Wars champions. The rules added to the excitement: pennies and dollar bills boosted a class’s total, while silver coins (nickels, dimes, and quarters) could be strategically placed in rival buckets to subtract from their totals.
When the dust settled, Principal Mr. Kirk Bromley proudly announced that the 6th Grade Center’s Math classes claimed this year’s victory. But the true highlight came when students were able to surprise a representative from the Carthage Humane Society with a check presentation during the school day. Coincidentally, the representative was already on campus as a guest speaker, making the donation reveal especially meaningful.
“This was about more than winning a competition,” said Bromley. “Our students showed tremendous heart and generosity in supporting an organization that means so much to our community. We’re proud of the way they came together to make an impact.”
