A Carthage man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg after a late evening shooting in the 900 block of west Chestnut on Tuesday.

Carthage Police Spokesman Chad Dininger said the victim, whose name was not being released on Wednesday, was 47 years old and was treated for a wound to the upper leg at a Joplin hospital and released.

Dininger said witnesses were not able to identify a suspect or a vehicle in the incident, so no suspect or vehicle description was available as of Wednesday afternoon.

Dininger said officers responded to the call at about 11:16 p.m. on Tuesday.

“The caller reported a fight in progress in the 900 block of west Chestnut with multiple parties involved,” Dininger said. “The caller reported two gunshots. Officers arrived to find a 47-year-old male lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the leg.”

Dininger said witnesses saw a vehicle driving in the area but they couldn’t say whether the vehicle was involved in the shooting incident.

“Our investigative division is in contact with the victim and witnesses and trying to ascertain the details of what happened,” he said. “As of this time we haven’t received a lot of information to release.”

Dininger said investigating a crime during a pandemic has challenges, but not much changes in most cases.

“When the investigators head out, they know their jobs so there’s not a lot that changes,” Dininger said. “We wear (personal protective equipment) when we talk to witnesses or we just stand six feet apart. We are more cautious when it comes to situations where we have to be hands on with an individual, but really nothing much changes other than that.”
