The family of Sean Schubert, 18, Carthage, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court, alleging that Jordan Louis Riner, Carthage, was negligent in his handling of a gun leading to Schubert’s death.

The shooting of Schubert, who was a 2024 Diamond High School graduate, occurred February 8, 2024. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Schubert’s parents, William Aaron Schubert and Kelly Lane and Renee Council, the mother of Schubert’s child, who is listed in the petition as A. W. S.

From the petition:

On February 8, 2024, at approximately 10:02 p.m., Defendant Jordan Riner was present at the residence of Sean Schubert.

During the evening, Defendant Jordan Riner was examining and handling a firearm, specifically Glock 19 handgun.

Decedent Sean Schubert died at the scene as a direct and proximate result of the gunshot wound inflicted by Defendant Riner’s negligent handling of the firearm.
