Families of seriously ill children to benefit from holiday tradition of giving

Owen Jones was born 30 days premature and weighed 5 lbs. 9 oz. and spent seven days in the NICU.  His mom and dad (Renee and Shawn) spent four days at Ronald McDonald House in Joplin. “We live an hour away, so the Ronald McDonald House made it possible for us to be right there for every moment while Owen was there. They treated us like family, and this world is truly blessed to have such amazing caring people!” said Renee.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four State’s tradition of holiday giving is written in the stories of families, donors, volunteers, staff, and the medical community. The Charity’s annual Gift of Light, Gift of Love sponsorship campaign is taking place now through December 31st with a goal to raise $150,000 for the sole purpose of operating its two programs and giving a family like the Jones what they need most – each other.

Ronald McDonald House of the Four States provides a ‘home away from home’ for the families of seriously ill children (0-21 years) and ill expectant mothers.  It’s more than a room in which to stay; it provides comfort, support and resources for the family of a sick child who is being treated at Freeman Health System and Mercy Hospital Joplin. The House has served over 3,279 families from 268 different communities in the Four State area. Families have called the House their home for a total of 33,207 nights.  Just $10 can sponsor a family for one night.

Moments away from a child’s bedside at Mercy Hospital Joplin, the Ronald McDonald Family Room gives moms and dads a place to recharge. Families can grab a bite to eat, shower and rest. The Family Room opened November 13, 2017 and has served 168 families for a total of 1230 visits.

Sometimes the best medicine of all is having family nearby for more hugs, kisses and “I love you’s.”  Be a part of the ongoing story by becoming a Gift of Light, Gift of Love sponsor.  To become a part of the charity’s story of giving, individuals may give online at www.rmhjoplin.org or by calling 417-624-2273.  RMHC values gifts of any size.
