SUMMARY:Virtual Box Turtle Portrait Painting Program April 17
DESCRIPTION:Springtime means turtles are on the move\, so what better way to capture these unique critters than with a painted portrait? \nJoin the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) for a virtual Box Turtle Portrait Painting Program from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday\, April 17. \nRegister by April 14 at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/215953. \nMDC volunteer Gala Keller will provide step-by-step painting instructions on how to paint a box turtle portrait on canvas. Participants will need to provide their own painting supplies. Once registered\, they will receive a supply list the week before the program and once more after registration closes. \n“Using a small canvas and simple techniques\, with no painting experience necessary\, this virtual program is great for ages 6 and up\,” according to Keller. \nAlthough this program is free\, registration is still required. Registrants must provide an email\, so a program link may be sent to them. For this program\, only one registration will be needed per screen for multiple participants at the same location.

SUMMARY:Regional Hay School Being Offered in Mt. Vernon\, April 22
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Missouri hay producers will have an opportunity to attend a regional school in Mt. Vernon April 22 to learn how to improve their hay making skills. \nThe program is offered by Lawrence County University of Missouri Extension in cooperation with FCS Financial\, MFA Bulk Fertilizer Plant in Mt. Vernon and Nixa Hardware & Seed Company. \nThis day-long non-credit course is specifically designed for livestock producers who already own hay equipment or have hay custom harvested on their land. \nAll aspects of hay and round bale silage production will be covered according to Tim Schnakenberg\, an agronomy field specialist with University of Missouri Extension. \n“There is a lot at stake when making hay and many things to consider to make it worth the effort and to be profitable\,” said Schnakenberg.  “Attending a hay school is an important management tool to insure that you will get the most out of your land\, time\, fertilizer expense and hay equipment during the 2026 season.” \nThe program will focus on topics like economics of hay production\, forage options\, hay quality issues and testing\, fertility management\, round bale silage management\, hay storage\, feeding to keep losses low and nutritional needs of cattle. \nThis regional hay school will be held from 9:00 a.m to 4:15 p.m.\, at the Southwest Research Extension and Education Center at Mt. Vernon. \nThere is a small fee to attend the program which includes a noon meal and materials. \nPreregistration is required by April 20 and space is limited. Contact the Lawrence County MU Extension Center at 417-466-3102 to pre-register or register on-line at https://pears.io/events/mu/5819/.

SUMMARY:'Farm Management - On My Own' Virtual Workshop Series April-May
DESCRIPTION:For farm operators and landowners who find themselves in a position to run their operations for the first time\, the University of Missouri Extension offers a lunch and learn virtual series\, “Farm Management – On My Own\,” comprised of five educational opportunities to learn the basics of ag leasing\, Missouri farmland values\, rental rates and custom work rates. \n“This series exists because of the number of calls and questions I was getting from landowners who were widowed\, divorced or single and who were running their farms by themselves for the first time\,” said Amie Breshears\, MU Extension Ag Business Field Specialist in Benton County. \n“The goal of this series is to educate and empower landowners and farm operators as decision-makers by equipping them with knowledge and resources\,” said Breshears. \nAlthough the program was designed for Missouri landowners and farm operators\, all are welcome to participate in this informal\, participant-driven and learner-focused event. \nThe seminar series will lend participants access to the most recent cash rental rate and farmland value data in Missouri which can help them make sound decisions when entering or negotiating a leasing agreement or when considering financial decisions related to land investments. \nCosts related to custom work\, land values and renting ag land shift over time. By understanding current values in relation to a landowner or farm operator’s broader financial picture can help them maximize profitability and prepare for sustainable success\, said Breshears. \nThe “Farm Management – On My Own” series can give participants sufficient time for leasing agreements that might need to be established or modified in 2027\, and rental rates can be revisited. \n“You’ll gain confidence when discussing these topics with tenants\, landowners or other decision-makers in the operation\,” said Breshears. \nThe series runs for five sessions over the lunch hour (Noon-1:00 p.m.): \nApril 2 Ag Leasing – basic components of a lease \nApril 16 Ag Leasing – types of leases \nApril 30 Missouri farmland values \nMay 7 Missouri rental rates \nMay 14 Missouri custom work rates \nThe cost is $40 per person (includes all 5 sessions). \nRegister: https://extension.missouri.edu/events/farm-management-on-my-own-ag-leasing-what-its-worth. Registration will remain open until the series concludes on May 14\, 2026. \nContact: Amie Breshears abreshears@missouri.edu.
