Show-Me-Select heifer sale scheduled for Nov. 20 in Carthage

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Approximately 200 bred replacement heifers are expected to be available for purchase during the Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program sale scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at Joplin Regional Stockyards.

The sale will feature spring-calving heifers from 12 consignors. The heifers are expected to calve from late January through April 30.

The University of Missouri Extension’s Show-Me-Select (SMS) program provides cattle producers with education on heifer development, including management, reproduction and genetics. The goal is to ensure a dependable supply of high-quality bred replacement heifers.

Patrick Davis, MU Extension livestock field specialist, said the program focuses on helping producers make informed decisions about developing replacement females for their herds.

“These commercial bred heifers are either purebred or crossbred,” Davis said.

The sale will include Angus, Beefmaster, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Red Angus and Simmental heifers, along with their composites. The animals will include black, black-white-faced, red and red-white-faced heifers.

Crossbred heifers can benefit from hybrid vigor and tend to have greater longevity. According to Davis, crossbred females produce one more calf on average than purebred females.

Artificial insemination is another consideration for buyers. Davis said many of the heifers in the sale have been artificially inseminated and are carrying offspring from high-accuracy AI sires.

Davis recommends considering heifers carrying calves sired by these bulls because the available information can provide greater insight into the potential performance of their offspring. Knowing the exact breeding date also can help producers better estimate calving dates and prepare for the calving season.

Joplin Regional Stockyards is located at 10131 Cimarron Road in Carthage.
