CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage R-9 School Foundation, the not-for-profit 501c3 dedicated to providing alternative funding sources to the students and teachers of the Carthage School District, concluded an exciting week of awards for local students.
On Monday, May 4th, seniors were awarded for their academic achievements during Senior Academic Awards Night in the Carthage High School gymnasium. The Foundation awarded over $107,000 from 32 different sources, totaling 103 scholarships overall. Combined with support from community scholarships, this year’s awards equaled a grand total of over $264,000 – the largest in Carthage history, to the largest number of senior applicants ever.

The month of April saw the conclusion of two of the Foundation’s biggest contests at Carthage High School: The Flanigan Speech Contest and Helen S. Boylan Art and Writing Contest. The Flanigan Speech Contest began 53 years ago with John H. Flanigan, a prominent Carthage attorney who believed in fairness, good citizenship and the pursuit of civil rights. Mr. Flanigan’s establishment of the Flanigan trust at UMB Bank set the precedent for the competition we know today. After Mr. Flanigan’s passing, the family kept the tradition alive over the years. Most predominantly, Mr. Flanigan’s grandson, Matt, and his wife, Tracy, took a particular interest in promoting the contest during a time when interest started to wane. They contributed to the trust, building the value and also the rewards offered with it, to the winners. Matt and Tracy’s son, Bren, carried on the family tradition as a highly decorated speaker and state champion in the Extemporaneous Speaking category.
This year’s Flanigan Speech Contest winners represent the best and brightest that Carthage High School has to offer, most of which are under the instruction of Mr. Bryan Whyte, head Speech and Debate Instructor at Carthage High School. Congratulations to this year’s award recipients!

The Helen S. Boylan Art and Writing Contest capped a successful April, spotlighting both the talent and creativity of the students at Carthage High School. Originally started as a writing competition to promote skills one of the Boylan Foundation board members felt needed more focus, the contest expanded after Helen’s niece, Elizabeth Simmons, moved back to the area and decided to add an art component due to her family’s long interest and patronage. Since then, the spring season ahs seen the walls of CHS decorated with the works of 3-d art, painting, drawing and photography that often make their way to competition within the Central Ozark Conference and our community, as well. We applaud our winners and their talent!
